About The Collection Owner

Mohammad Sadik Al-Mojaddedi was born in 1889. He grew up in Medina and received formal education in Religion, Arabic. Mathematics, Science and English. After leaving school he established an import trade business, against his fathers wishes, who had always wanted him to become a teacher in the Prophets Mosque. Mohammad Sadik Al-Mojaddedi became interested in collecting stamps in the days when the Hejaz was still part of the Ottoman Empire and the curious "Western" hobby of Philately was almost unknown in the area. During the First World War he and his family were evacuated from Medina to North Arabia (now Homs, Syria) and the harsh conditions there led him to sell parts of his Collection and this turned into (amongst other things) a stamp dealing business. After the war he moved back to Medina and continued stamp dealing. In those difficult times in the turbulent area that was to become the rich and powerful Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Mohammad Al-Mojaddedi must have had an exciting time with many interesting tales to tell. One particular story revolves around a shipment of sugar and grain belonging to Al-Mojaddedi, due to arrive at the Port of Rabigh and which was confiscated by the Army of Sharif Ali. Al-Mojaddedi arranged a meeting with Sharif Ali to discuss the situation with him, The Sharif apologised but explained that as it was war time no funds could be spared to compensate him, however knowing of his interest in stamps the Sharif offered to make up the loss in the form of Postage Stamps from his Post Office in Jeddah. Knowing that the Sharif would not remain in power for much longer Al-Mojaddedi wisely accepted the offer and returned to Makkah with huge piles of Postage stamps from the Post Office in Jeddah. Mohammed Al-Mojaddedi and Brothers became important stamp dealers and promoters of the hobby of Philately with connections in the area, in Europa and North America.
The initials "MSM" on the reverse of a Saudi Arabian stamp are perhaps less well known than "Ela" (EL Angeloglu) or A. Eid but are nevertheless an important guarantee. Mohammad Al-Mojaddedi became one of the leading Merchants of Makkah and one of the founders of Macca Chamber of Commerce & Industry. He was part of a major trade delegation to Pakistan and India in the early 1960s. He died in Makkah in 1965. After his death the Collection was at first well preserved but following several relocations in the next 20 years or so parts of it were sold or lost. The remaining portions of Ottoman Empire, Hejaz, Hejaz and Nejd and Saudi Arabia and rest of the world are offered for sale here.
